India on Tuesday said its mission in Iran has relocated most of the Indian students from Tehran in view of the precarious security situation in the Iranian capital.
India’s move came as the conflict in West Asia intensified as the US and Israel launched fresh attacks on Iran, while Tehran continued its retaliatory strike against several Gulf countries.
“Due to heightened risk perception in Tehran, the Indian Embassy has relocated most of the Indian students who were in Tehran,” the Indian mission said.
The students were transferred to places outside Tehran.
The embassy said it arranged transportation, food and accommodation for the students.
“Only a small number of students who rejected the embassy’s offer remain in Tehran,” it said.
“For other Indian students and Indian nationals still remaining in Iran, the advice issued earlier remains unchanged: stay where you are, stay indoors as far as possible and stay away from windows,” the embassy said.
In the new advisory, the embassy also asked Indians to always exercise caution, avoid visiting protest or demonstration areas and stay in regular contact with the mission.
About 9,000 Indians including students learned to be stuck in Iran. The exact number of Indian students in Iran is not immediately known.
The conflict in West Asia intensified after Iran attacked Israel and US military bases in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia on Saturday when Iran attacked Israel.
As part of its offensive, Iran blocked the strategically located Strait of Hormuz, triggering a sharp rise in global oil prices.
The US military said six of its personnel had been killed in the conflict so far.
The US-Israeli strikes killed at least 787 people, Iran’s Red Crescent Society said. At least 11 people were reportedly killed in Israel.
