On Thursday, India formally wrote Pakistan to inform about the decision on the new Delhi, that the Indus Waters waters were immediately effectively implemented, with Islamabad violating the terms of the contract.
The decision to suspend a decade of old contract comes as a result of a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir Pahalgam, in which 26 people were killed on Tuesday, mostly tourists.
India said that permanent cross -border terrorism in Pakistan focuses on Jammú and Kashmir prevents Indian rights under Indus Water.
The contract, signed in 1960, allocates the Eastern Greeks – Sutlej, Beas and Ravi – to India and Western rivers – Indus, Jhelum and Chenab – to Pakistan.
“The Indian government has decided that the Indus Waters 1960 contract will take place with immediate effect,” reads a letter from Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary, JAL Shakti Ministry of Syed Ali Murtaz, Minister of Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources.
“The obligation to honor the contract in good faith is essential for the contract. However, what we have seen instead is maintained by Pakistan for cross -border terrorism focused on the territory of the Indian Union Jammú and Kashmir,” he said.
India added that they further state that the resulting uncertainties for security directly prevented the full use of India’s rights under the contract, and, among other violations she had committed, Pakistan refused to respond to India’s request to conclude conduct as expected under the contract.
Over the past two days, reducing diplomatic links to retaliation against Pahalgam’s attack, India has taken several measures, including the expulsion of its military attrans, closing the integrated attari control column and suspension of visa services to Pakistani nationals.
“All existing valid visas issued by India Pakistani nationals have been abolished from 27 April. All existing valid visas issued by India Pakistani nationals have been standing since 27 April 2025,” said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
India also asked its nationals to avoid traveling to Pakistan, and those in Pakistan were asked to return to India first.
Border security forces (BSF) also “reduced” the ceremony of beating in Attari, Hussainiwala and Sadki along the border of India-Pakistan.
