India Women want to dominate world cricket: Amol Muzumdar lays out a ruthless vision
India women’s cricket head coach Amol Muzumdar has set his sights on a bigger goal after the team’s historic success in recent years. While winning major tournaments remains important, Muzumdar wants India to take the next step and establish itself as a dominant force in world cricket.
Having witnessed the growth of Indian cricket at close quarters, Muzumdar believes the team has the talent and mindset to achieve these ambitions. The former Mumbai batsman, who has repeatedly emphasized the importance of preparation and discipline, wants his players to carry the same hunger into every match, regardless of the opponent or the format.
“Two years from now, if they start dominating world cricket… dominance is something we have always talked about in the team. Being ruthless on the ground is another thing we have always maintained,” Muzumdar said at an event organized by the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai (SJAM).
“Obviously, from the background I come from, my growth in Mumbai cricket was a bit similar. I try to inculcate those things, or bring it back. If we start dominating world cricket, I would be happy,” Muzumdar added.
HOW MUZUMDAR TRANSFORMED INDIA’S WOMEN
Muzumdar took charge of the Indian women’s team on 25 October 2023, replacing Hrishikesh Kanitkar. His appointment came at an important time as India prepared for two major ICC tournaments over the next two years. Since then, the team has enjoyed considerable success across formats.
The decisive moment of his work came on November 2, 2025, when India beat South Africa by 52 runs in the World Cup final in Navi Mumbai. They had earlier made history in the semi-final when they chased down 339 against Australia to register the highest run chase in women’s ODI cricket at that time.
However, Muzumdar wants to ensure that the World Cup triumph is not the highlight of the team’s journey. His ambition is to build a side that can consistently challenge and beat the best teams in the world, rather than relying on individual moments of brilliance or occasional tournament success.
India has already shown signs of this approach in its latest assignment. They completed a clean sweep of the three-match T20I and ODI series against Zimbabwe, winning all six matches.
The challenge will be even tougher in December when India travel to South Africa for a multi-format series comprising a one-off Test, three ODIs and three T20Is.
