India Women made a disappointing start to their new era after winning last year’s World Cup as Australia clinched the ongoing three-match ODI series. On Friday 27 February, India suffered a five-wicket defeat in the second ODI at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, with Australia chasing 252 with 83 balls to spare, powered by Georgia Voll’s second ODI century.
The win provided some relief for Australia, coming four months after losing to India in the Women’s World Cup semi-final at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Alyssa Healy, meanwhile, will cherish her farewell ODI series as she led her team to a series win. Australia also secured a 4-2 lead in the multi-format series with this triumph.
Australia vs India Women’s 2nd Selection ODI Highlights
HARMANPREET, SHINE PRACTICE
After opting to bat first, India managed 251 for nine, a total that ultimately proved insufficient against a dominant Australian batting line-up.
Pratika Rawal, who struggled for a duck in the series opener, bounced back with a half-century and scored 52 off 81 balls. However, her innings ended in frustration as she was run out after a tangle with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who herself made a valuable 54 off 70 balls.
Several other Indian batsmen reached double figures, including Smriti Mandhana with 31, Richa Ghosh 22, Kashvee Gautam 25 and Amanjot Kaur 13, but none of them could convert their starts into match-defining contributions, leaving India short of a competitive total.
Australia, despite missing Sophie Molineux due to back pain, her absence was barely noticeable. All their bowlers except Darcia Brown contributed to the Indian wickets, with Ashleigh Gardner taking two for 39, Alana King two for 41 and Annabel Sutherland two for 37.
VOLL, LITCHFIELD TAKE DOWN INDIA
In response, Australia looked completely in control. Phoebe Litchfield scored 80 off 62 balls while Georgia Voll hit 101 off 82 balls to form a crucial 121-run partnership that kept the chase on track.
Voll’s innings included 13 fours and a six, reaching his century off 80 balls and earning the Player of the Match award. The duo punished everything that was lost, rotated the strike effectively and kept India’s bowlers under constant pressure.
Contributions from Beth Mooney, who made 31, along with minor cameos from Annabel Sutherland and Ashleigh Gardner, helped Australia reach the target comfortably in 36.1 overs, highlighting the gulf in momentum between the teams.
Indian debutant Vaishnavi Sharma conceded 34 runs in four overs, while Shree Charani escaped with 41 runs in 4.1 overs, further illustrating the pressure Australia applied throughout the innings.
