India continues its constant increase in the human development index (HDI) and places 130 out of 193 countries in 2025 Human Development Report (HDR) Published on Tuesday (May 6, 2025) UN Development Program (UNDP).
With the increasing value of HDI from 0.676 in 2022 to 0.685 in 2023, India remains in the middle human development category and approaches the threshold for high human development (HDI ≥ 0.700). The average life expectancy is also the highest since the establishment of the index, indicating a strong recovery from the pandemic and its impact on life expectancy.
2025 HDR called ‘Selection: People and Options in AI AI ‘It emphasizes the critical role of artificial intelligence in the formation of another chapter of human development, especially in rapidly growing economies, including India.
“India Has Progressed from 133 in 2022 to 130 in 2023. of the Index is and the Country’s Robust Recovery from the Pandemic and Its Investments and Commitment to Long-Term Human Well-Being, ”Said Angela Lusigi, Resident Representative, UNDP India.
The report notes that in India, life expectancy increased from 58.6 years in 1990 to 72 years in 2023, the highest recorded since the beginning of the index.
It attributes this to national medical programs followed by subsequent governments, including national rural health mission, Ayushman Bharat, Janani Surraksha Yojan and Poshan Abhiyaan.
It is also expected that children will stay on an average of 13 years at school today, an average of the 8.2 years in 1990. “Initiatives such as the Law on Education, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, National Educational Policy 2020 has increased results.
The HDR adds that the gross national income in India increased four times, from $ 2167.22 (1990) to $ 9046.76 (2023) and 135 million Indians escaped multidimensive poverty in 2015–16 and 2019-21.
However, the challenges persist, while inequality reduces the Indian HDI by 30.7%, which is one of the highest losses in the region, the report is said.
“While the inequality in health and education has improved, revenue and gender differences remain significant. Participation in women’s labor and political representation lags behind, although recent steps-like is a constitutional change that reserves one third of legislative seats for women-promises for transformation change,” HDR said.
The report placed India in a unique position around the world as growing powerhouse AI with the highest AI skill and the growing domestic maintenance of talent-20% of Indian scientists AI now remains almost zero in the country in 2019.
The report emphasized the wider global slowdown of human development. The HDR 2025 reveals that the current pace of progress has been the slowest since 1990 and India is no exception.
“If the trends before 2020 continued, the world would be on the way to achieve a very high human development by 2030, which would be in line with the timelines of sustainable development goals,” the report said.
The inequality between low and very high HDI countries has increased for the fourth consecutive year and has reversed long -term progress, the report said.
