NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that Ahmedabad is likely to host the Olympics in 2036. The announcement follows Ahmedabad’s recent successful bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.“Recently you have won the Commonwealth Games bid. But people of Ahmedabad be prepared as the city will also welcome the Olympics in 2036,” Shah said at the closing ceremony of the Sansad Khel Mahotsav.During his three-day visit to Gujarat, Shah mentioned that Ahmedabad will host several national and international sporting events ahead of the 2036 Olympics, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games.The ceremony was held at the new Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura, Ahmedabad, which is part of Shah’s Gandhinagar constituency.Shah announced that the complex is costing Rs 800 crore, with other sports facilities under construction, including the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave at Motera.“I am sure that when the Olympics are held here, India will be among the top five countries in the medal standings,” Shah said.He noted that Indian athletes are now winning more international medals due to increased funding for sports under Prime Minister Modi’s government, which has increased from Rs 800 crore in 2014 to Rs 4,000 crore in 2025.Shah later inaugurated the Ahmedabad Shopping Festival at Sindhu Bhavan Road, organized by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
