India on Thursday (May 22, 2025) welcomed the decision of the United Kingdom to hand over the sovereignty of the islands of Chagos, including the tropical atoll of Diego Garcia to Mauritius under the historical agreement.
The United Kingdom gives up the rights of islands after more than 50 years.
According to the agreement, the United Kingdom will be full responsibility for the safety of the strategically placed Diego Garcia.
India said in its reaction that it consistently supported Mauritius’s “legitimate claim” over the Chagos archipelago in accordance with its fundamental position “decolonization, respecting sovereignty and the territorial integrity of nations”.
We welcome the signing of the contract between the United Kingdom and Mauritius on the return of Mauritian sovereignty over the Chagos archipelago, including Diego Garcia, said the Ministry for External Affairs (MEA).
“The formal solution of the long -term Chagos dispute through this bilateral contract is a milestone and a positive development for the region,” he said in a statement.
“This is further to understand between the two sides achieved in October 2024 and represents the culmination of the process of decolonization of Mauritius in the spirit of international law and order based,” Mea said.
It is reported that India is still determined to work closely with Mauritius and other similarly -minded countries to strengthen maritime safety and regional stability and ensure peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean area.
