
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more hot days for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and other northwestern states. At the same time, the atmospheric conditions in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal indicate an advancing Southwest Monsoon, which is likely to set over Kerala on May 26.
IMD Weather Alerts Today
An orange alert for heavy rain is in place for Sikkim and parts of West Bengal today. Several northwestern states are on IMD yellow alert due to heat wave, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
On Saturday, May 16, Wardha and Amravati in Maharashtra recorded the highest maximum temperature of 46°C.
The Meteorological Office in its latest report said: “Southwest Monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on May 26 with a model error of ± 4 days. Heatwave to severe heatwave is likely to prevail over some parts of the plains of northwest India and central India during many days of the week.”
He added, “Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over Northeast India during the week and over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe and South Interior Karnataka during the next 3-4 days.
The IMD issues warnings of heat waves, hot and humid weather
The West Rajasthan region is expected to witness heatwave conditions till May 22. Temperatures may peak in isolated pockets on May 21 and 22. In Uttar Pradesh too, heat waves are likely till May 22, but the mercury is expected to rise sharply between May 19 and 22.

The IMD has predicted a gradual rise in maximum temperatures of 3-4°C over the western Himalayan region by May 19. In addition, a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 3-5°C is also expected over the plains of northwest India till May 20.
Rainfall Warning for Northeast India
Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh on 17th and during 20th-22nd. Assam & Meghalaya during the 16th-18th & on the 21st, 22nd; Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on May 21 and 22, the IMD said.
