The creation of Bangladesh after the war with Pakistan from 1971 was not a diplomatic triumph for India, the main Minister Assam Himanta Bisw Sarma stated on Sunday (May 11, 2025).
He said India wasted her strategic advantage during Bangladesh’s birth in several numbers. It was not to ensure the corridor wider than the “neck of the chicken”, the narrow belt in the Siliguri region in West Bengal, which combines geographically disadvantaged northeast with the land and does not ensure easy access to Chittagong port.
He also said that the leadership of India in 1971 could not solve the issue of illegal Bangladesh migrants when it was in position.
“The Indian military victory of 1971 was decisive and historical. He broke Pakistan in two and gave birth to Bangladesh. But while our soldiers brought stunning success on the battlefield, Indian political leadership could not ensure lasting strategic profits,” Sarma said.
“Creating Bangladesh is often considered a diplomatic triumph, but history tells a different story,” he said, describing Bangladesh’s creation by a strategic triumph, but a diplomatic foolish.
The main minister said India was supported by the secular Bangladesh, but in 1988 Islam was declared a state religion. “Today, political Islam is doing well in Dhaka and undermining the values that India fought for protection,” he said.
“The Hinda, once 20% of the Bangladesh population, has decreased to 8%. Systematic discrimination and violence continue – a shameful reality ignored by India largely,” he added.
Mr. Sarma said that despite the military dominance of India, the vulnerability of the Siliguri corridor could not resist part of the northern Bangladesh.
Demographic impact
“No agreement has ordered the return of illegal Bangladesh migrants. As a result, Assam, Bengal and the northeast face uncontrolled demographic change, provoking social unrest and political instability,” Cm said.
He lamented that India did not provide access to the strategic port of Chittagong in Bangladesh. “Five decades later, it remains grounded in the northeast, even though it gave birth to a nation through blood and victim,” he said.
The main minister also pointed out that for decades Bangladesh served as a base for anti-indebbell groups that used vacuum India, which did not close in 1971.
“India’s Military Triumph in 1971 Was Not Matched by Strategic Foresight. What Could Have Been and New Regional Order Was Reduared to A One-Sed ACT. Had Mrs. Indira Gandhi Been Alive Today Armed Forces.
Civilian volunteers
The Union of all Bodo students (ABSU) said it would send 10,000 youth to Bodo as civilian volunteers for any help on the Indian-Pakistani border.
ABS President Boro and Secretary General Khanin Basumatary said the Union had committed similar support to the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee during the Kargil conflict in 1999.
They said that young people would be sent to a national duty after proper training.
The Union also announced the postponement of the 57th Annual Conference due to the tensions between India and Pakistan after the terrorist attack of Pahalgam. “In this decisive time, ABS with a nation stands and is always ready to protect the integrity and sovereignty of the nation,” they said.
