India, recovering from a crushing defeat to South Africa that left their campaign hanging in the balance, responded in style to beat Zimbabwe by 72 runs to go on to retain the World Cup title.More than five months later, the two sides meet again under completely different circumstances. India arrive in Harare after back-to-back T20I series defeats in Ireland and England, with new captain Shreyas Iyer still looking for his first win. The three-match series, which begins on Thursday, offers the world champions a chance to halt the slide and restore confidence.Iyer has lost six of his first seven matches as T20I captain and knows the results have to change quickly.“We had a rough patch in England but there were a lot of positives. We understood what we need to build as a team going forward and what kind of awareness and adaptability is required at this level,” Iyer said on Wednesday.Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will once again be the center of attention. Harare is the venue where the 15-year-old made his mark on the global stage with a stunning 175 off 80 balls against England in the Under-19 World Cup final in January. His partner Abhishek Sharma, who recorded his first T20I set on the ground in 2024, also has happy memories here.However, Sooryavanshi comes into the series under scrutiny after a tough debut tour of England where scores of 14, 13 and 15 highlighted his struggles against quality pace, particularly Jofro Archer. Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza urged the youngster to be patient.“If a 15-year-old player is playing international cricket, criticizing him after two or three matches is not justified. Vaibhav is an extremely talented cricketer and could be a generational talent if managed well,” Raza said.The series is important for several Indian players looking to revive their T20 careers. Vice-captain Tilak Varma will be keen to rediscover form after disappointing returns in Ireland and England, while Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh, both back in the squad, will be looking to cement their places.India’s improved pace attack with Prince Yadav, the returning Mayank Yadav, Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur will also be under the scanner. Meanwhile, Ravi Bishnoi will be hoping to sort out his problems with the back ball while working with the bowling coach for this series, former Indian left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi.Zimbabwe enter the competition confident after recent wins over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, as well as a memorable 23-run upset of Australia in the T20 World Cup 2026.
