The countdown to the FIFA World Cup T20 final between India and New Zealand in Ahmedabad has sparked the usual debates about team combinations and head-to-head matches. But there is another element at the Narendra Modi Stadium that could quietly shape the outcome — the pitch.
Motera is unlike most places in India as it offers three different types of surfaces: red soil, black soil and a hybrid of the two. Everyone brings their own personality to the game. Black pitches tend to be slower and can stick a bit, making it harder for batsmen to play down the line. On the other hand, red clay surfaces usually provide better bounce and pace, often leading to higher scores.

India’s experience earlier in the tournament they can also have a fresh mind when deciding what works best. During the Super Eight stagethe hosts suffered a heavy defeat against South Africa on a black-clay pitch in Ahmedabad where the surface slowed down and scoring became difficult as the game progressed. The curators therefore carefully considered their options before the finale. According to ESPNcricinfo, the center field expected to be used for the title clash is likely to be a combination of red and black soil. These hybrid strips generally offer the best of both worlds, enough bounce and pace for the stroke play, but also some grip for the bowler during the match.
Interestingly, the latest call was not officially confirmed even as of late Friday. Broadcasters had yet to install stump cameras, which usually meant the surface was still being completed. However, one particular pitch attracted a lot of attention from the ground staff, with local curators scrutinizing it while BCCI CEO Hemang Amin was also seen taking stock before the strip was finally covered.
The surface itself was hardly used during this tournament. It hosted only one match – Canada vs. South Africa on February 9 – where the Proteas piled up 213 to win by 53 runs. As the pitch has remained largely intact since then, the final could be played on one of the newer strips at the venue.
HOW WILL AHMEDABAD PITCH FAVORITE IND VS NZ?
If the mixed-ground surface behaves as expected, the final could turn into a fast-paced, high-scoring contest. These pitches tend to offer good bounce and carry, which helps both aggressive batting and pace bowling.
Indian seamen could enjoy the early overs. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh are likely to want to attack with the new ball if the pitch allows movement under the lights. In the spin department, India have options in Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel, while Kuldeep Yadav could also come into consideration if the team opts for spin. Even if the pitch doesn’t turn dramatically, the spinners will still play an important role in controlling the middle overs.
New Zealand’s bowling attack is equally suited to these conditions. Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson are both capable of getting bounce and pace from live surfaces, while James Neesham offers another seam option that can chip in with key overs. Their spin unit, led by captain Mitchell Santner and supported by Rachin Ravindra and Cole McConchie, provides balance if the pitch starts to falter a bit later in the innings.
India enters the final with history within reach. After beating England in a dramatic semi-final – where Sanju Samson powered India to a massive 254 – the hosts now have a chance to become the first team to defend their T20 World Cup title, at home.
New Zealand, meanwhile, are chasing their own breakthrough moment. The Black Caps were dominant in the semi-final against South Africa in Kolkata, they restricted them to 168 before Tim Seifert and Finn Allen sparked the chase with a blistering opening stand to seal a nine-wicket win in just 12.5 overs.
With two aggressive batting line-ups and a bowling attack that thrives on pace and bounce, the pitch in Ahmedabad could end up adding another layer of intrigue to what promises to be a thrilling World Cup final.
