India captain Suryakumar Yadav has a complicated history with Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, the venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup T20 final against New Zealand on Sunday, March 8. It was at this venue that he made his T20I debut for India in 2021 and immediately established himself on the international stage.
But Ahmedabad also holds painful memories for Suryakumar.
The same stadium witnessed one of the toughest nights of his career during the 2023 ODI World Cup final where he struggled when India desperately needed a boost. This performance effectively closed the door on his ODI future.
Now, India’s T20I skipper returns to the venue again, hoping to bury those ghosts when the hosts take on Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand in a summit clash.
Unlike the 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, India do not enter this final with a perfect record. The road to the title clash was far from smooth.
Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakravarthy, the world’s No. 1 T20I batsman and No. 1 T20I bowler, both endured tough tournaments and came close to losing their place in the playing eleven. India went through several stages of the competition but still managed to find their way to the finals.
Their semi-final win was a tense, high-scoring thriller against England at the Wankhede Stadium, where India won by seven runs after posting a massive 253 on the board. Jasprit Bumrah and Sanju Samson put in outstanding performances to help India defend the total.
New Zealand’s run to the final was equally dramatic.
The Kiwis endured an inconsistent campaign and were on the brink of elimination during the Super 8 stage. Their fate ultimately hinged on the Net Run Rate equation involving Pakistan, who played the last match of the Super 8 tournament.
As the game unfolded, the New Zealand players reportedly gathered in Mitchell Santner’s room, nervously watching the match and hoping the equation would fall in their favour.
Finally it happened. Classic New Zealand followed.
Despite entering the knockout clash as underdogs against South Africa, the Kiwis produced a clinical performance with both bat and ball to dominate the 2024 finalists and secure an impressive nine-wicket win.
The win was so emphatic that it brought a rare smile to even the otherwise stoic Mitchell Santner. Speaking ahead of the final, Santner joked that he wouldn’t mind “breaking a few hearts” on Sunday, stopping short of quoting Pat Cummins’ famous line from the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
History beckons the Indian team as they have a chance to be the first team to win the T20 World Cup title at home. They can also become the first team to successfully defend the title. India can also call themselves three-time champions if they beat the Blackcaps in Ahmedabad. So yeah, no pressure.
On the other hand, New Zealand fans will be waking up early in the morning to catch a glimpse of their side looking to win their first T20 World Cup title. With a game for all to play and fans flocking to the Narendra Modi Stadium in large numbers, we can expect an instant classic to cap off the cricket carnival.
