India-US Trade Agreement: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of the Indo-US trade deal during a meeting of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parliamentary party. The Prime Minister told the NDA leaders that the coalition was winning various elections due to its people-friendly policies and hard work.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told reporters after the NDA parliamentary party meeting that PM Modi also told NDA MPs that they should not be satisfied with their wins in various polls, including local polls, but continue the good work.
In the meeting, Modi was thanked by NDA leaders for successfully concluding trade deals with 39 countries. The Prime Minister arrived at Parliament House for the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting. During the meeting, he was praised for the trade agreement between India and the United States.
“The Result of Enduring Patience”
In his speech, the prime minister said the India-US deal was the result of sustained patience, noting that earlier criticism over the tariff negotiations had now given way to a positive outcome, according to an India report. In his speech, he said the trade deal created a favorable economic environment and reflected the government’s consistent and measured approach to global trade negotiations, the report said.
“People criticized the tariffs but we remained patient and the results are visible now,” PM Modi said.
The meeting came a day after US President Donald Trump said the US and India had “agreed on a trade deal”, with Washington reducing the reciprocal tariff from 25 percent to 18 percent, “out of friendship and respect” for Prime Minister Modi.
In his first remarks following President Trump’s announcement Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, he thanked the US president for reducing tariffs to 18 percent. PM Modi said he was “pleased” that Made in India products would now face 18 percent duty.
PM Modi said, “It’s great to talk to my dear friend President Trump today. I’m delighted Products made in India will now have a reduced duty of 18%. A big thank you to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement.
Other ministers present
Union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Bhupender Yadav along with BJP leaders CR Patil and Giriraj Singh also arrived for the meeting. AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP M Thambi Durai and BJP MP Ashok Chavan were also present.
The Lok Sabha was adjourned for an hour on Tuesday amid protests and sloganeering by opposition members over the recently announced trade deal between India and the US. The opposition on Tuesday claimed that the Union government did not make an official statement or take the confidence of Parliament.
Both Houses of Parliament have reconvened the debate on the “Thanks to the President’s Speech” motion during the ongoing budget session.
It is wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today. We are pleased that Made in India products will now have a reduced duty of 18%.
The Lok Sabha witnessed a heated exchange between NDA and INDIA MPs during Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s speech during which he quoted former Army General MM Naravane’s unpublished memoirs on border tensions with China. BJP members strongly objected to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks saying that he violated the rules of the House. The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day.
The proposal comes in response to President Droupadi Murma’s speech at a joint sitting of both the Houses to mark the commencement of the Budget Session on January 28.
