
On Thursday, Narendra Modi informed Parliament that India had “taken” the news that China began with the construction of the Mega Dam project on the lower reach of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, in the upper section of Brahmaputra in Tibet.

The Indian Government “took note of the reports of the construction of the Mega Dam project from China on the lower sections of the Yarlung Tsangpo (upper reach of Brahmaputra) in Tibet,” Singh said in response.
The government “carefully monitors” all developments concerning the Brahmaputra River, including China’s plans for the development of hydropower projects, and “takes the necessary measures to protect our interests, including preventive and corrective measures to ensure the lives and living of Indian citizens who stay in subsequent areas,” he said.
Where is the Yarlung Tsangbo river?
The Yarlung Tsangbo River comes from the Himalayas Tibetan and enters India as Siang in the state of Arunacal Pradesh before it flows down Assam like Brahmaputra. The river will finally enter the Gulf of Bengal via Bangladesh, where it is called Padma.
