New Delhi, 3 June (PTI) India on Tuesday claimed consultations with the US under the warranty of the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding American tariffs for automatic components.
This step comes shortly after India has reserved the right to store retaliation for selected US products in response to US tariffs on steel and aluminum.
On March 26, 2025, the US took measures in the form of an increase in the tariff by 25 % ad valor for imports of passenger vehicles and light trucks and on certain automotive parts from India or India, the road sent to the WTO said.
Measures on car parts are valid from 3 May 2025 and for an unlimited period of time.
“India believes that the measures in its proposal and effect are protective measures in the sense of …. Gatt (General Agreement on Trade and Tariff) of 1994 and warranty agreement because it is to protect the US domestic industry from increased imports,” he said.
He added that the United States could not inform the WTO Committee for warranty on the basis of the provisions on the Agreement on Guarantee (AOS) on the adoption of the decision to apply measures.
“In accordance with this, as a affected member with significant interest in the United States in the products concerned, India requires consultation with the United States,” he said.
In consultations, India would like to exchange opinions on measures.
“India is looking forward to receiving a quick answer to this request from the United States and to determine the convenient date and place for … consultations,” he said.
India reserves all its rights on the basis of an agreement on the establishment of the WTO.
Last year, the US imported $ 89 billion worldwide, with Mexico representing $ 36 billion, China for $ 10.1 billion and India for only $ 2.2 billion.
