
India became a global leader in the production of a railway locomotive and in the fiscal year 2024-25 reached a record production of 1,681 locomotives, the Ministry of Railways said in a statement.
This milestone overcomes the total production of locomotives of regions such as the US, Europe, South America, Africa and Australia, reaffirms the growing dominance of India in the global railway sector.
Indian Railways’ locomotives of units of unit production achieved a milestone by producing 1,681 locomotives in various categories during 2024-25. This means an increase of 209 locomotives, ie 19%, compared to 1,472 locomotives produced in 2023-24.
This record production is highest for the production of locomotives in the country, reflecting the significant achievements of all units in improving railway infrastructure and capacity.
The constant increase in the production of locomotive is a direct consequence of strategic decisions taken to strengthen the “make in india” initiative, the statement said.
Between 2004 and 2014, India created a total of 4,695 locomotives, with a national annual average of 470. On the other hand, from 2014 to 2024, the production of the locomotive witnessed a significant increase, producing 9,168 locomotives, which increased the annual average to approximately 917.
From the total production of the locomotion in 2024-25, the locomotive of Chittaranjan 700 locomotives, Banaras Locomotive Works produced 477, Patiala Locomotive Works contributed to 304 locomotives and Madhepura and Marhowrah made 100 locomotives.
Most locomotives produced in the country were designed for freight trains. In accordance with this were 1047 WAG-9/9h locomotives, 7 WAG-9HH locomotives, 148 Twin locomotives WAG-9, 2 LOCOMOTES WAP-5, 272 LOCOMOTIV WAP-7, 5 NRC locomotives, 100 WAG-12B locomotives, 100 WDG 4G/6G locomotives.
