New Delhi, July 8 (PTI) India could be among countries expected to soon complete a business agreement with the US, because President Donald Trump will increase the pressure by issuing formal tariff letters by several nations, but the new Delhi must carefully pedal, said the economic Think Gtri on Tuesday.
“Trump’s model is not an agreement on free trade, it is a Yatra – providing an agreement on the US tariff,” said Global Trade Research Initiative (Gtri).
The US extended the countries to the countries to complete the two -sided business agreements with the US from 9 to 1 August, with the last three -week window to come into force before entering into force.
The extension is part of the wider business offensive launched on April 2, when Trump identified about 60 countries for special tariffs if they did not sign new stores that coincided with American business interests.
So far, only the United Kingdom and Vietnam have fulfilled. There is also a temporary agreement with China.
“Trump is now escalating pressure. July 7 has signed formal letters to 14 countries and outlined the tariffs to face from August 1 if they could not conclude an agreement,” said founder Gtri Ajay Srivastava.
On Monday, Trump-Sanity announced 25 % of Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Tunisia; 30 percent of South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina; 32 % of Indonesia; 35 % of Bangladesh, Serbia; 36 % Cambodia, Thailand; And 40 percent of Laos, Myanmar tariffs.
Srivastava said that these warnings, which described the White House as “final announcements”, leave countries with a significant choice to sign an agreement on US conditions or face repressive duties.
He added that it is expected to increase tariffs to disrupt trade streams, increase consumer prices in the US and cause a wider complication of the supply chain around the world.
American imports from China in the previous period dropped by 35 percent in May 2025.
“With the ticking of the lesson, India is perceived as the best candidate for an agreement on the agreement in the coming days … but the new Delhi must tread carefully,” he said.
With the US proving willingness to suppress agreements and depositing unilateral conditions, for example on BRICS members, India must consider the strategic value of engagement against the risks of an unbalanced agreement, warned.
