Soon after the government cleared the order of 62,000,000 GBP for 97 other LCA Tejas Mark 1a fighter aircraft, India is close to completing an agreement worth about $ 1 billion with the US company General Electric (GE) for 113 GE-404 engines to power indigenous aircraft.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has already closed 99 GE-404 engines for the first dose of 83 LCA. Fresh public procurement will meet the requirement for another 97 fighters, ensure continuity in delivery and avoids production delay, the officials said. The agreement is expected to be sealed by September.
With the new order, the total requirement of the Hal of 212 GE-404 engines will be met. GE is expected to increase supplies to two engines per month. HAL plans to deliver the first 83 fighters by 2029-30 and the next 97 to 2033-34.
In parallel, it negotiates the Hal with a larger agreement for 200 GE-414 engines required for LCA Mark 2 and Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The agreement is expected to include an 80% transfer of technology for approximately $ 1.5 billion. About 162 engines will be for LCA Mark 2 fighters, while 10 will drive prototypes AMCA.
The purpose of the extended LCA program is to replace the MiG-21 IAF fleet and strengthen the indigenization by generating work for defensive MSME.
