India is aware of the goal of China, which becomes naval power, and the new Delhi closely monitors all developments in the Indian Ocean, which interferes with its security and economic interests and takes the relevant measures to protect them on Friday (July 25, 2025).
In a written response to Lok Sabha, the Minister of Foreign Affairs for external affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh also said: “Our relations with the Indian Ocean countries are complex and long -term, based on their own merit and are independent of their relations with any third countries.”
The Ministry of External Affairs has been asked whether it is a strategic challenge for India in the Indian Ocean area.
“The government is aware of China’s goal to become maritime power. In this strategy, China develops ports and other infrastructure facilities in litoral countries in the Indian Ocean area,” he said.
China also has a naval and maritime presence in the Indian Ocean area, including through anti-pirate accompanying missions, port calls and deployment of research and reconnaissance vessels, Mos said.
The government closely monitors all developments in the Indian Ocean, which interferes with India in the field of security and economic interests and takes appropriate measures to protect the interests of India, he added.
Countries, such as Sri Lanka, Maldives and Mauritius, occupy a central place in Indian policy “first neighborhood” and visions of Mahasagar (mutual and holistic progress for security and growth across regions), Mos said.
“Our political relations with countries in the region are strong, business and investment ties are increasing, development projects and infrastructure cooperation are underway, and there is a wide involvement in all sectors,” he added.
