The United States on Thursday sought to control the damage done by US President Donald Trump’s controversial social media post, in which he tweeted that the US leader believes India is a “great” country led by “a good friend of mine”.
The president said that “India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top,” a US embassy spokesman said.
The spokesman’s statement came in response to questions from Indian media about the controversy sparked by Trump’s posting on social media of comments by radio show host Michael Savage calling India, China and some other countries “hellholes”.
The spokesperson did not specify where or when Trump said that India is a great country.
Savage made the comments in connection with a US Supreme Court case challenging primogeniture.
When asked about the controversy, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have seen some reports. I will leave it at that.”
