On this day, 14 years ago, India won the ODI World Cup by defeating Sri Lanka with six goals in the big finals at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. Mrs. Dhoni became only the second Indian captain, driving on the devil to lift the sought -after trophy.
Sri Lanka, who first decided BAT, published a competitive total of 274/6. Mahela JayaWardene was their standout artist and scored the undefeated 103 out of 88 balls, of which 13 were four. Thiara Perera’s Quick-Fire 22 out of 9 balls added late dynamics to their shifts. Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh took two goals for India.
In response, India faced early failures because Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were cheaply released. Gautam Gambhir, however, settled the ship by a decisive 97-run before Perera slipped. Mrs. Dhoni remained undefeated at 91 out of 79 ballsIt leads to India to win with 10 balls to save.
India was a force that could count on a cup of the world. Mrs. Dhoni’s men became the first team to win a sought -after title at home and created a trend that continued for the next two editions.
