India impress against Panama for 1-1 draw as Blue Tigers stand firm against World Cup side

India hold Panama to a 1-1 draw in World Cup in key Test for Khalid Jamil’s side/ Image: X India had to surrender a first-half lead but the Blue Tigers left Bengaluru with a big lead from a 1-1 draw against Panama, who are ranked 94 places above them in the FIFA rankings and feature several players from the country’s recent World Cup campaign. Ryan Williams put India ahead shortly before half-time, but Omar Valencia leveled in the second half with a long-range strike to leave Khalid Jamil with an encouraging result against the world number 44.

Williams rewards India’s positive first half

Panama enjoyed more possession in the opening stages, but India remained compact and looked increasingly dangerous as they pushed forward, showing no signs of being caught off guard by opponents who had competed at the FIFA World Cup just a few months earlier.India created their first clear lead in the eighth minute when cut-back Akash Mishra found Williams inside the penalty area, although the striker failed to clear his shot. Williams went close again 10 minutes later when he dragged his effort just wide, while Ashique Kuruniyan then found the side netting as India continued to threaten.The pressure finally brought the breakthrough in the 41st minute. Akash sent a long ball forward, Williams timed his run perfectly to get behind the Panama defense before keeping his composure to beat goalkeeper Marcos Reyes to put India 1-0 up four minutes before the break.It was a momentous moment for the team, ranked 138th in the world, playing in Bengaluru for the first time since winning the SAFF Championship at the same stadium in 2023.

Panama responded but India resisted the pressure

Panama came with more urgency after the restart and quickly began to test the Indian defence. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu equaled the first major threat when he saved from Giovany Herbert five minutes into the second half.The visitors finally got an equalizer in the 68th minute when Valencia struck from outside to make it 1-1 and give Panama a platform from which to look for a winner.India still had an opportunity to regain the lead. Ashique sent a low cross into the box in the 79th minute, but Edmund Lalrindika failed to make proper contact. Two minutes later, Edmund worked his way down the right and set up Manvir Singh who tried to finish with a heel rather than take the easier option and miss the chance.Panama then came forward in search of the decisive goal, hitting the woodwork and forcing Gurpreet into another crucial save. India’s goalkeeper was also tested by Carlos Harvey, one of the visiting World Cup players, but India survived a late push.Manvir again came close late in the game after being played in by substitute Edmund, while Abhishek Singh Tekcham fired wide in a corner as India continued to carry a threat of their own.

India now turn to Brazil and Uruguay

A 1-1 draw gives Jamil’s side an important result ahead of a much more demanding series of friendlies. India will take on five-time world champions Brazil in Kolkata on October 3 and two-time world champions Uruguay at the same venue three days later.For India, the significance of Friday’s result is not just that they avoided defeat against Panama, but also the manner in which the Blue Tigers took on the 44th-ranked team in the world. The end of the first half gave Williams a lead to protect, Panama eventually found a way through and India then created enough chances to believe they could have taken all three points.The next two matches will be a considerably tougher test, but the performance in Bengaluru has given Jamil’s side something substantial to take into them.
