India on Thursday (Mar 12, 2026) said it had received a request from Bangladesh for the supply of diesel.
External Affairs Ministry official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that against the backdrop of the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict, the Maldives and Sri Lanka have also requested energy supplies from India.
“We have received a request from the Bangladesh government for the supply of diesel, which is being reviewed,” Mr Jaiswal said. An official statement said that since 2007, India has been sending diesel from the Numaligarh refinery to Bangladesh through various means such as “waterways, railways and later the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline”.
The two sides signed an agreement to supply 5,000 metric tons of high-speed diesel from Numaligarh to Bangladesh in 2017.
“It should be noted that while diesel exports to Bangladesh have largely continued since 2007, Indian refining capacity, our own requirements and availability of diesel will be taken into account in the decision,” Mr Jaiswal said.
He added that “several other countries including Sri Lanka and the Maldives” have also requested power supplies from India.
