The day after India abstained from the UN General Assembly in Gaza, the Indian government distanced itself since Saturday’s statement in Shanghai cooperation (SCO), which “strongly” condemned Israeli military strike in Iran and said that “India did not participate in this statement.
In his statement, SCO came out to support Iran, a Member State, and said that Israeli attacks led to civilian victims and were contrary to international law and Charter of the UN.
In a report published soon after the SCO issued a statement supporting Iranian sovereignty, the Ministry of Outside stated that Israeli hostility should be solved through “dialogue and diplomacy channels” and “it is necessary for international communities to carry out”.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) referred to the Friday conversation of the Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar with his Iranian counterpart Sayyid Abbas Araghchi and said that the Indian position was handed over to Mr. Araghchi during the telephone conversation. “He (Mr Jaishankar) also called for avoiding any escalating steps and premature return to diplomacy. The overall position of India, as mentioned above, was communicated to other SCO members.
“Member States of the organization for cooperation in Shanghai (SCO) express serious concerns about the escalating tensions in the Middle East and strongly condemn the military strikes that Israel carried out in the territory of Iran’s Republic,” SCO said in a statement.

SCO urged to resolve the dispute over Iranian nuclear energy and stressed that the matter should be solved by “peace, political and diplomatic means”.
“Such aggressive measures against civilian goals, including energy and transport infrastructure that resulted in civilian victims, are gross violations of international law and charter. They represent violations of Iranian sovereignty, cause damage to regional and international security and pose serious risks for global peace and stability,” SCO said.
Iran joined SCO in 2023, when India was chairman of the organization. After Iran’s admission to SCO, he joined BRICS in August of the same year at the Johannesburg summit, which was considered a sign of reviving large economies of global south.
Formerly on Friday, the UN Security Council, India refrained when a resolution called for Israel and Hamas was adopted to comply with international law and call for “immediate and permanently facilitated full, fast, safe and unlimited humanitarian aid in Gaza, including food and health, fuel, shelter and access to clean water”.
India is the only country from the groups of SCO and BRICS that delayed this resolution Ung.
