Seeking to address speculation about India’s energy supplies amid escalating tensions in West Asia, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) said on Thursday (March 26, 2026) that India has so far secured one month’s supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) through imports, with further purchases continuing.
A government statement added that India has reduced its dependence on LPG imports, with India producing “much more” than it needs to import.
Fuel crisis LIVE
On oil, the government said Indian oil companies have secured oil reserves to last for the next 60 days, while the country already holds 60 days of reserves.
Plenty of stock and future imports
The 60 days of current supplies, which include diesel and gasoline stocks, are an increase from the 50 days of total supplies the government claimed to have at the start of the war in West Asia.
Cumulatively, India currently has a total fuel reserve capacity of 74 days, including crude oil, petrol and diesel.
“Nearly two months of steady supply is available to every Indian citizen irrespective of what is happening around the world,” it said in a statement. “The next two months of oil purchases have also been secured. India is completely safe for many months to come and the quantity in strategic cavern storage becomes secondary in such a supply situation.”
“We produce more LPG than we need to import”
While stressing that there is no shortage of LPG in the country, the government said India now produces more LPG than it needs to import. It said that domestic refinery production has increased by 40% since the LPG control order issued earlier. According to her, this increased the daily production to 50 thousand metric tons (TMT), which is more than 60% of domestic demand.
Besides, on the import front, the government said that 800 TMT of LPG cargo is heading to India from the United States, Russia, Australia and other countries.
“Approximately one full month of supply is firmly secured, with additional orders being completed on an ongoing basis,” it said.
The government also warned against misleading social media posts and fabricated claims of shortages and said action would be taken against those responsible.
