India face tricky final WTC journey after Test win in South Africa’s Cape Town: Here’s how
India’s journey to the finals of the 2025-27 World Test Cup (WTC) has become considerably tougher after South Africa’s series win over Australia in Cape Town. While the result rocked the points table, it also underlined the challenge facing Shubman Gill’s men, who have very little room for error in the remaining seven Tests.
India are currently fourth in the table with 68 points and a run percentage (PCT) of 51.52 after 11 matches. There are two Tests against New Zealand away from home, followed by a five-match home series against Australia. With only the top two teams qualifying for the finals, India will need a near-perfect end to their campaign.
South Africa vs Australia 3rd Test Day 5: The most important | Scorecard
The upcoming two-Test series against New Zealand could be particularly important. If India win both the matches, their PCT will rise to 58.97, giving them a much needed boost. However, a loss in both Tests would reduce their PCT to 43.59, which would pose a huge challenge for them in the remaining five matches.
Even winning all five Tests against Australia after losing both matches against New Zealand would only give India 59.26 per cent. This could leave them dependent on results elsewhere.
On the other hand, a win in all seven remaining Tests would take India’s PCT to 70.37, putting them in a strong position to challenge for a place in the finals. Even six wins would give them 64.81 percent. However, two or more defeats would greatly strengthen their qualification hopes.

NEW ZEALAND TAKE TOP SPOT, PROTEAS MOVE TO SECOND
The latest ranking has undergone a significant change after South Africa’s 176-run victory over Australia in the third Test in Cape Town. Temba Bavuma’s men clinched the series 2-1, taking the PCT to 71.42 and moving into second place.
Australia, meanwhile, slipped from the top to third after their PCT dropped from 75 to 69.23 following the defeat. New Zealand subsequently moved to the top of the standings with 72.22 per cent, amassing 52 points from six Tests.
India also moved up to fourth place after Bangladesh’s defeat against West Indies in Mirpur, which moved them to fifth place.
With South Africa, New Zealand and Australia all occupying the top three positions, India’s qualification equation is getting more complicated. Gill and Co. they will have to take care of their own results and hope that their opponents drop crucial points for the rest of the cycle.
