India face a tough South African test in Harmanpreet Kaur’s historic outing

Harmanpreet Kaur will make history on Sunday when she takes on South Africa in the Women’s T20 World Cup Group A clash. He will become the first cricketer, male or female, to play 200 T20Is. But while the game is historic for Harmanpreet, the main purpose of the match should not be forgotten.

India have been amazing in the tournament so far, winning both their matches against Pakistan and Netherlands. But the real test begins now. India need to continue their winning run as a loss would put them in a bit of a tricky position. Earlier on Saturday, Australia strengthened their grip at the top of the table with a net rate of +4.391, literally becoming the only point between India and South Africa.

Earlier this year India lost to the Proteas 1-4 when they toured South Africa. This time is a chance for India to put that disappointment behind them and turn the tables. It is also the first time that the two teams will face each other in the history of the tournament.

CAN INDIAN POWERPLAY BOWLING IMPROVE?

India didn’t make too many mistakes in the contest but their bowling in the power over was not that great. They conceded 52 runs against Pakistan before the spinners pulled things back in the middle overs. Even against the Netherlands, they looked under pressure before Nandni Sharma took the first wicket on her World Cup T20 debut.

India know they will face a tougher challenge against South Africa. Laura Wolvaardt gave them nightmares in the bilateral series, scoring 330 runs at an average of 83.50. So if India allows Wolvaardt to get in, they could be in serious trouble.

India also need to figure out their fast bowling combination. Nandni picked up two wickets against the Netherlands, but Kranti Gaud is yet to make an impact in the tournament, which could spark calls for Arundhati Reddy to return or even push for Renuka Singh Thakur’s inclusion. It goes without saying that India cannot afford to lose control in the powerplay against a strong South African batting line-up.

INDIA AGAINST PROTEASES PEACE OF FIRE

In the first two matches, India did not face a quality bowling attack and will now face a much bigger challenge. Veteran Indian fast bowler Shikha Pandey saluted South Africa has the strongest bowling unit in the ongoing competition. The quick trio of Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka and Shabnim Ismail have been troubling the batsmen throughout the tournament.

They put in a strong performance against Pakistan and gave them a clear idea of what it means to face the Proteas attack. Kapp and Ismail are known to breathe fire and attack early. India have Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma in top form but they will have to be careful against the South African attack.

Looking ahead to the battle between Ismail and Shafali, Pandey noted that Ismail will not miss an opportunity to try it out with the bouncers. She also advised Mandhan to play calculated shots. If the Indian opening pair can withstand the early burst from the pacers, they can put pressure on the South African attack.

WHO WILL REPLACE SHREYANKA?

In the next match, India will have to make a forced change Shreyanka Patil has already been eliminated from the tournament due to a leg injury. Although India has brought young tennis player Prema Rawat, she is unlikely to feature. India are expected to go with Radha Yadav, who also adds depth to the batting as she recently scored a fifty for RCB in the WPL.

However, India still has to decide who will handle death, with Shreyanka previously specializing in the role. Bowling coach Aavishkar Salvi said that India have bowlers trained to handle in different situations of the match.

India also need to call on Arundhati Reddy and Bharti Fulmali. Both did not start against the Netherlands. While it will be hard to leave out Nandni after her performance in the last match, it remains to be seen if Fulmali will bring in for Yastika.

CAN SOUTH AFRICA BE MORE CLINICAL?

South Africa, on the other hand, started their campaign with a heavy defeat to Australia before bouncing back with a win over Pakistan. However, against Pakistan, the Proteas were made to work hard after Fatima Sana’s all-round performance almost cost them the match. If not for Annerie Dercksen’s 35-ball 52, South Africa might have fallen behind.

They will need to improve their batting as facing India will bring its own set of challenges. Laura Wolvaardt’s team knows that defeat to India would make qualification for the semi-finals extremely difficult.

However, going into the match, South Africa can take confidence from their dominant series win over India at home earlier this year, although the conditions will be very different this time around.

Little separates the two teams in their head-to-head records. From 24 matches, India have a narrow 11-10 edge over the Proteas. The two sides are yet to meet in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup.
