February 20, 2026

India on Friday confirmed that it attended the inaugural meeting of US President Donald Trump’s peace council on Gaza as an “observer” country. MEA spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said: “We attended the Peace Council meeting in Washington DC as an observer. We also welcomed President Trump’s initiative on the Gaza Peace Plan as well as the ongoing efforts under UNSCR 2803.”

According to the list of participants at the meeting held at the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace, India was represented by the chargé d’affaires at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC, Namgya Khampa.

Till date India has not joined the Peace Council which was established by POTUS for the reconstruction of Gaza Strip. She previously stated that she was considering the proposal and did not accept the offer.

What is the Peace Council?

Earlier this month, Trump unveiled his “Peace Deck” for Gaza in Davos, Switzerland.

The council is part of the POTUS administration’s “comprehensive plan” to end the conflict in Gaza. It includes a 20-point plan to bring peace to the Middle East.

Main points of the first meeting of the Peace Council

– The agenda of the Peace Council meeting focused on the restructuring of Gaza – the Palestinian territory decimated by Israel since the October 7 attacks by Hamas.

– The first meeting of the Governing Council, held on Thursday 19 February, brought together representatives of 40 countries for high-level talks focused on the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

– President Trump gave a keynote address announcing that up to nine countries had pledged $7 billion in aid to Gaza.

— He also announced that the US will allocate $10 billion to the board, whose members include 27 countries such as Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
