India and Canada agreed to accept access to cooperation to a new chapter in bilateral ties, including close work with terrorism and multinational crime, said the Ministry of External Affairs (Mea) on Saturday (September 20, 2025).
The National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and his Canadian counterpart Nathalie Drouin organized extensive interviews in Nový Delhi on Thursday (September 18, 2025) with a focus on repairing bilateral relations, which after a diplomatic decay in 2023 in 2023.
Mea was released on Saturday (September 20, 2025) with wide results of interviews.
“Both parties agreed closely to the way forward and accepting access to cooperation to a new chapter in bilateral relations,” he said.
In June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to her Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the edge of the G-7 summit in Cananaskis, Canada.
At the meeting, both leaders agreed to take “constructive” steps to restore stability in Indian Canadian ties.
It was also an opportunity to build on the discussion between Prime Minister Modi and Mr. Carney, Mea said about Doval-Dovin’s interviews.
“Both parties have recognized a clear dynamics for the reconstruction of the trust and expanding cooperation at the highest level of political leadership,” she said.
MEA said both NSAs have made a “productive” discussion of the development of a bilateral relationship, including areas such as countermeasures, the fight against a multinational organized crime and intelligence exchange.
“They agreed to strengthen security cooperation and further strengthen the existing involvement mechanisms,” Mea said in a statement.
He said, “Both NSA also considered priority areas for future cooperation and exchanged opinions on regional and global development.”
Interviews between two NSA came three weeks after India and Canada named the envoy to the capital cities.
India-Canada relations hit the rock floor after the potential Indian connection to the killing of Hardeep Singha Nijjar in 2023.
In October last year, India remembered her High Commissioner and five other diplomats after trying to connect Ottawa with Nijjar. India also ruled out the same number of Canadian diplomats.
However, the victory of the Liberal Party leader Carney in the parliamentary elections in April helped to reset relations at the start of the process.
