India’s T20 World Cup captain Suryakumar Yadav believes the country now has enough talent to field several competitive teams in the shortest format. The captain said that a strong domestic set-up and the Indian Premier League play a major role in building India’s depth.
Suryakumar took over the T20 captaincy in 2024 after Rohit Sharma stepped down following India’s World Cup triumph in Barbados. Dough said in a PTI podcast that the constant influx of players from domestic cricket and the IPL has created a huge talent pool in India.

“If you talk about talent, I feel you can find talent on a regular basis. There is IPL cricket, franchise cricket, then there is domestic cricket,” said Suryakumar.
The India captain pointed out that every year new players emerge through the system to strengthen the bench strength of the national team.
“You can see how many players are coming every year. So in T20 you can make as many teams as you want when I talk about T20,” he added.
Suryakumar also said that the depth of the Indian format has reached a point where it should not be underestimated.
“So I feel the talent is limitless. If you can make two to three XIs, our base is so strong, the Indian team. So it’s not a humble and diplomatic answer. But it’s so strong now, so there’s no shame in telling the truth,” he said.
Since taking charge of the T20 side, Suryakumar has overseen a dominant run for India. The team won 42 of the 52 matches played under his leadership, reflecting their consistency in a format known for its unpredictability.
HOW INDIA RULES CRICKET
India’s recent success on the global stage has reinforced the depth Suryakumar spoke of.
The men’s team ended a long drought for ICC trophies by winning the T20 World Cup in 2024. The women’s team followed up this feat by lifting the ODI World Cup to secure their first ICC title.
India continued their strong run by defending the 2026 T20 World Cup title, becoming the first team in history to retain the trophy. The triumph was all the more special that it came on home soil.
India’s dominance extended to the junior level as well. The under-19 men’s and women’s teams have been lifting world championship titles over their heads in recent years.
With consistent success across the senior and junior teams, India has cemented its reputation as one of the most powerful forces in world cricket.
