India will undoubtedly head into the T20 World Cup final as firm favourites. Suryakumar Yadav’s men will have the Ahmedabad crowd as their 12th player when they take on Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, March 8. India will also take confidence from last year’s win over New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final and will be hoping to repeat that feat on the big stage.

But the key question remains: how much will India need to ensure they end up on the winning side against the Black Caps? Their last two matches against the West Indies and England turned into high-scoring contests where the bowlers had to work hard as the batsmen made the most of the excellent batting surfaces. So will the upcoming summit clash in Ahmedabad be another run-fest, or will India’s bowlers finally find relief on big nights?
HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH IN AHMEDABAD?
Ahmedabad has traditionally been kind to the batsmen, with an average first innings score of around 183 in the 14 T20Is played at the venue since 2012. Teams batting first have had remarkable success, posting an average of around 189, while the chasing sides have averaged around 176.
The numbers underline a clear trend. Nine of the 14 T20Is at the Narendra Modi Stadium have been won by the teams batting first, suggesting that setting the total has often proved advantageous.
India knows how tough the chase can be at this venue. In their first Super 8 match of the tournament, they were bowled out for 111 while trying to chase down 188 against Aiden Markram-led South Africa. Abhishek Sharma has been India’s biggest weakness on the field. (Image: AP)
In 28 T20I innings at the ground, the teams crossed the 180-run mark on 13 occasions, reinforcing the idea that Ahmedabad is rarely a low-scoring venue. Even in this tournament, 180 was generally considered a par total.
South Africa holds the record for the most successful chase at the venue after tracking down 176 against the West Indies earlier in the competition.
Given the nature of the surface and the venue’s historical trends, India are likely to need at least 190 to feel they have the upper hand. If they manage to push the total to 200 or more, it could be decisive in the final.
SPINE OR PACE IN AHMEDABAD?
Spin may not play a major role in the upcoming clash. In the T20Is played at the venue so far, the pacers have dominated with 117 wickets compared to 43 for the spinners. This trend continued in this World Cup, where spinners accounted for only 28.76 percent of the wickets. As a result, while both sides have quality spin options, the focus is likely to be on how effectively they use their pace attacks to make an impact. Jasprit Bumrah is an Indian batsman. (Image: AFP)
Jasprit Bumrah was impressive in Ahmedabad, taking four wickets at an excellent economy of 4.57. Arshdeep Singh was also effective, maintaining an economy rate of 7.14. New Zealand’s pacers, including Lockie Ferguson, Jacob Duffy and Matt Henry, did not enjoy their best against South Africa in Ahmedabad but will have an opportunity to bounce back against India.

- In the 2026 T20 World Cup: Pacers – 52, Spinners – 21
CAN INDIA FINISH CLINICALLY?
India has had its share of ups and downs during the World Cup. They were unbeaten in the group stage but faced a reality check when they lost to South Africa by 76 runs. Even their victories against the West Indies and England were hard-fought; had Sanju Samson not finished in those matches, India’s position in the tournament could have been very different.
On the plus side, India kept up the momentum and won the key matches when it mattered most. The key was not to play a perfect game, but to outscore today’s opposition, which they achieved against the West Indies and England.
Now India face New Zealand – the same opponents they defeated in the Champions Trophy final in Dubai last year. With a chance to become the first team to defend the Men’s Under-20 World Cup title, India enter the finals in strong form and with every reason to believe they can successfully achieve the historic feat.
