India A vs Sri Lanka A: Prabhsimran Singh’s costly mistake sparks controversy; a furious Ruturaj Gaikwad questions the decision
NEW DELHI: There was a moment of high drama and controversy during the Tri-Nation A Series clash between India A and Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Tuesday, with India A left fuming over a dismissal decision that could have dramatically changed the course of the match. The incident occurred in the 42nd over of Sri Lanka A’s chase when Vipraj Nigam bowled a length delivery outside Chamica Karunaratne’s off stump. The batsman hit the ball towards backward point and went for a quick single only to be sent back at mid on.As Karunaratne scrambled to regain his position, the throw flew towards the keeper’s end. To the naked eye it appeared to be a direct hit and Karunaratne looked to be a long way off his crease. The India A players immediately erupted into celebration, confident that they had pulled off a crucial lapse at a critical stage in the chase. However, the drama was just beginning. The third umpire was called into action and records showed that wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh had inadvertently disturbed the stumps before the incoming throw made contact with them. Under the rules of the game, the run-out could not stand as the bails were released before the ball hit the stumps. As a result, Karunaratne was not convicted. The decision drew lively reactions from the Indian camp. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was visibly unhappy and was seen having a lengthy discussion with the on-field umpire. The Indian players seemed frustrated not only by the result but also by how quickly the decision was reached.India believed that the direct hit should have counted and that Karunaratne, who was outside his wicket, would have been run out comfortably had the stumps remained intact.
