IND vs WI 4th T20I Preview: Can Hyderabad’s folded pitch deliver what Gambhir wants?
India are one win away from sealing the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, but the fourth T20I in Hyderabad raises a question that goes beyond the result: will the rescheduled pitch deliver the more even match Gautam Gambhir called for earlier in the series? India’s head coach stressed the need for better pitches that give bowlers a fair chance rather than letting them avoid damage on batting-friendly surfaces. The fresh surface at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium will test that expectation.
India then lead 2-1 bounce back from defeat in the second T20I with a 14-run win in Indore. West Indies were chasing a target of 250 in the second match, underscoring the devastating potential of their batting line-up. India responded with a more effective bowling display in the third match, but the visitors are still capable of turning the match in the matter of overs.
The fourth T20I of the five-match series is played on Tuesday, October 14, with the toss scheduled for 6:30 PM IST. Live streaming of India vs West Indies T20I series will be available on JioHotstar app and website while the matches will be telecast live on Star Sports Network in India.
Hyderabad is traditionally a high-scoring venue and the firepower on both sides makes another tough encounter a distinct possibility. However, the recently renewed surface adds to the uncertainty about how much help the bowlers might get. Both teams will need to assess the conditions quickly, especially in the powerplays, where an early powerplay could affect their approach.
It’s an opportunity for India to wrap up the series; for the West Indies, this is a chance to force a decision. Whether the new surface brings bat and ball into a more even match, as Gambhir wants, or creates another batting-dominant spectacle, it will be one of the key storylines in Hyderabad.
ATTACK FOR GOALS
India will look to carry their aggressive approach with the ball into the fourth T20I as they look to seal the series. Vice-captain Tilak Varma said the team reviewed its approach after conceding 249 in the second match, when Shai Hope’s century propelled the West Indies to a memorable chase.
Tilak admitted that India had become too defensive as the visitors scored freely, but said head coach Gautam Gambhir had urged the bowlers to attack and create wicket-taking opportunities. India responded with a 14-run win in Indore, although the West Indies continued to show their ability to score quickly.
“The West Indies are a really good side, especially in the T20 format. They play so much franchise cricket so they know how to play the format. The strength they have is unbelievable,” Tilak said.
With India 2-1 up, their task will be to maintain that attacking intent against a line-up capable of changing the game in the matter of overs.
POWERPLAY BATTLE
The opening six overs could prove crucial for West Indies as they look to level the series. Head coach Darren Sammy identified the powerplay at both ends as an area where his team needs to improve ahead of the fourth T20I.
Sammy pointed out that India had scored almost 14.5 overs in the power play, leaving the West Indies catching up, although they managed to slow down the score later in the innings. He believes the visitors need to start harder with both bat and ball to challenge the hosts.
“To beat India in India, you really have to win both powerplays, with the bat and the ball,” said Sammy.
At a venue known for high scores, West Indies will need to contain India’s aggressive top order while capitalizing on their own powerplay opportunities. A better start could keep them in the contest and set them up for a series decider in the fifth T20I.
REPORT ON THE PITCH
Hyderabad’s reputation as a batting venue suggests the possibility of another high-scoring contest, but the recently renewed surface adds an element of uncertainty. The country has produced some impressive totals in recent years and both teams have firepower to tap into if the conditions favor the batsmen.
The key question is whether the fresh surface offers enough help to the bowlers to make the match more even. Dew could also affect conditions later in the evening which could make life difficult for the bowling side.
HYDERABAD WEATHER FORECAST
The weather in Hyderabad is expected to remain favorable with no rain forecast for the evening. Temperatures are likely to drop from 30 degrees Celsius at 7pm to 27 degrees by 10pm. Skies should initially be partly cloudy, clearing around 9:00 p.m.
Humidity is expected to rise from 53 percent to 73 percent as the evening progresses. Wind gusts could soon reach 30 km/h before easing. With rain unlikely to interrupt play, the main weather-related factor could be dew later in the evening, which could make bowling difficult.
TEAM NEWS AND PREDICTIONS XI
India are likely to retain the XI that won in Indore, so Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will wait for his opportunity. West Indies batsman Amir Jangoo, who impressed during the ODI series, may have to wait for a chance to break into the T20I side.
The bigger concern for the visitors is the fitness of Romario Shepherd. He suffered an injury while bowling in Ranchi and was subsequently ruled out of the Indore match. His availability for the fourth T20I could affect West Indies’ balance, given his contributions with both bat and ball.
PREDICTED INDIA XI: Sanju Samson (WK), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav.
PREDICTED WEST INDIES XI: Shai Hope (C/WK), Kamil Pooran, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Quentin Sampson, Keemo Paul, Shamar Springer, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie.
