IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill breaks silence on Rohit exit rumors after Lord’s hundred

Quick results: England (387/3) beat India (360/7) by 27 runs in Lord’s ODI to win three-match ODI series 2-1

Rohit Sharma’s spectacular hundred at Lord’s may have answered many questions on the field, but Shubman Gill made it clear that there was no discussion in the Indian dressing room about the veteran’s retirement.

Speak after India defeat England by 27 runs in the third ODI at Lord’s on Sunday, Gill dismissed speculation about Rohit’s future, saying the rumors remained confined to the media and were not discussed within the team.

“We didn’t have a chance. I mean, he didn’t tell us anything. I think it’s all in the media, but there was no such discussion in the team,” Gill said in the post-match press conference.

Gill’s remarks came after Rohit produced one of the most memorable knocks of his ODI career under intense scrutiny. Chasing a daunting target of 388, the 39-year-old scored a magnificent 138 off 110 balls to keep India in the contest before ending up on 360 for 7 to lose by 27 runs as England wrapped up the three-match series 2-1.

Despite Rohit’s brilliance, along with Gill’s 77 and Virat Kohli’s 74, India could not overhaul England’s imposing 387 for 3, built on Ben Duckett’s career-best 142 and Jacob Bethell’s 91.

Rohit entered the series decider amid growing speculation over his ODI future after reports claimed selectors were eyeing the former captain with a view to the 2027 World Cup. The pressure mounted after scores of 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs.

The veteran opener responded in the only way he knows how. His 34th ODI hundred and the first by an Indian batsman at Lord’s was a reminder of his enduring quality. Opting not to celebrate the milestone, Rohit picked up the bat briefly before India’s bid for what would be a record chase at the iconic venue got underway again.

The BCCI also rejected the speculation. Secretary Devajit Saikia categorically denied reports that Rohit had been informed that the Lord’s ODI would be his last appearance for India.

“There is a lot of speculation going on in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly confirm that there was no such discussion about Rohit playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday,” Saikia told PTI.

Saikia also reiterated that Rohit continues to be a key part of India’s ODI plans.

“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord’s ODI will not be his last game,” he said.

Rohit has never made a secret of his ambition to play in the ODI World Cup 2027. While his form before Lord’s ODIs came under scrutiny, the century served as a timely reminder of his ability to perform on the biggest stage. Although India ended up on the losing side, the innings ensured that the conversation continued to focus on his batting rather than the speculation surrounding his future.
