IND vs ENG: Shreyas Iyer surpasses Rohit Sharma, equals Virat Kohli in unique captaincy record
Shreyas Iyer continued his unusual run of success ahead of India’s T20I against England on Thursday by winning his sixth consecutive toss as captain and equaling Virat Kohli for the second-longest run by an Indian captain in T20Is.Iyer’s remarkable run now leaves him just one toss victory away from equaling MS Dhoni’s record of seven consecutive tosses achieved between May 2010 and February 2012.Kohli also enjoyed a six-match streak between August and December 2019, while Rohit Sharma’s best sequence is five consecutive toss wins.
Most consecutive tosses won by an Indian captain in T20Is
- 7 – MS Dhoni (May 2010 – February 2012)
6 – Virat Kohli (August 2019 – December 2019)
6* – Shreyas Iyer (June 2026 – July 2026)
5 – Rohit Sharma (February 2020 – February 2022)
5 – MS Dhoni (September 2007)
While Iyer’s toss luck continued, India endured a difficult ride on the pitch after taking an early lead in the series. After a rain-affected opening match, the visitors lost two more T20Is, including a crushing 125-run defeat at Trent Bridge that allowed England to seize the momentum.Adding to India’s woes were injuries to two key bowlers.Fast bowler Harshit Rana and mystery bowler Varun Chakaravarthy have both been ruled out of the remaining two matches after suffering hamstring injuries during the third T20I.“Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy sustained hamstring injuries in the third T20I against England at Trent Bridge. They have been assessed by the BCCI medical team and have been ruled out of the fourth and fifth T20I,” the BCCI said in a statement. For the fourth T20I, India brought in all-rounder Washington Sundar and pacer Prasidha Krishna as replacements for the injured duo. With England holding the upper hand after back-to-back wins, India will be hoping that Iyer’s fortunes in the draw can finally translate into success on the field as they look to level the series and avoid another setback ahead of the decider.
