The country’s annual per capita water availability has steadily declined with population growth, from more than 5,000 cubic meters in 1951 to 1,486 cubic meters in 2021, falling below the internationally recognized water stress threshold of 1,700 cubic meters. It could further decrease to 1,367 cubic meters by 2031 and to 1,228 cubic meters by 2051.
