District administration officials on Monday convened a peace committee meeting at Inam Veerapur village near Hubballi, where a pregnant woman was killed by her family for recently marrying outside the caste in a case of “honour” killing.
A team led by Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu GRJ, Superintendent of Police Gunjan Arya and welfare officials met the elders of the village.
The leaders agreed to forget the past and live in harmony in the future. Members of the Doddamani family, who recently suffered caste discrimination and attacks, will be welcomed in the village and allowed to live in peace.
“People from different communities, including Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, Lingayat, Veerashaiva, Muslim, Kuruba and others, have lived in harmony for centuries. This was one unfortunate incident. We will not consider it as a problem facing the village. Let the law take its own course,” they said.
They also urged the Deputy Commissioner to take up some ongoing development works in the village.
The deputy commissioner said the state government would provide adequate compensation, livelihood support and legal aid to the victims. She said the state government would protect families from deprived communities. The police will ensure the protection of victims and witnesses, she added.
She urged leaders to work together to ensure that similar incidents do not happen again.
Mr. Arya said there is a need to live in harmony and follow the rule of law. He said all parties involved must work to give the victims enough confidence to live in peace.
According to him, the police will provide complete protection to the village. “The victim’s family needs support at this crucial time. We must all stand with them,” he added.
At one point there was an argument between the two groups. But the police and senior officers pacified them.
Leaders of various associations Suresh Khanapur, Premnath Chikkatumbal, Paramesh Kale, Chandrashekar Yadger, Sridhar Kandagal, Kenchappa Mallammanavar, Shankargouda Patil, Gurusiddaiah Hiremath, Lalita Madli, Basavaraj Walikar, Renuka Huilwagol, Mevantkar Walikar, Mevanand Shivanand Manakme Madar and others spoke.
Officials of various departments were present.
