The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted the amount of normal cumulative precipitation during the monsoon season of this year.
It also ruled out the possibility of El Nino conditions throughout the season.
“India is likely to see over normal rainfall in the four -month monsoon season (June to September), with cumulative rainfall estimated at 105 percent of the long -term diameter of 87 cm,” said IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra during the New Delhi press conference.
The conditions of El Nino, associated with under normal monsoon collisions on the Indian subcontinent, are unlikely to develop this time, he added.
The prognosis of normal precipitation during the monsoon season comes as a huge relief for farmers because it is essential for the Indian agricultural sector, which supports the livelihood of about 42.3% of the population and contributes 18.2% to the Indian economy.
The number of rain days decreases, while the events of heavy rains (more rain for a short time) grow, leading to frequent drought and floods, according to a PTI report that quotes climate scientists.
Parts of the country are already fighting extreme heat and in April to June a significantly high number of days of wool is expected. This could strain the power supply networks and result in a lack of water.
