IMD issues warning of heavy rain on 26-27 September in Uttarakhand; CM Dhami orders officials to maintain vigilance

After the India Meteorological Department issued ‘red’ and ‘orange’ rain warnings for several districts of Uttarakhand on September 26 and 27, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday (September 25, 2026) ordered officials to remain on high alert.

Appealing to residents and tourists to exercise extreme caution, the chief minister urged people to travel only if necessary and after checking the latest weather and road conditions.

A red alert has been issued

According to the weather forecast, a ‘red’ warning of heavy rain has been issued for five districts: Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar for Saturday (September 26, 2026). An ‘orange’ alert has been issued for five other districts – Dehradun, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Almora – while a ‘yellow’ alert is in place for the remaining three districts: Haridwar, Uttarkashi and Tehri.

On Sunday (September 27), a ‘red’ alert was issued for four districts – Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri and Haridwar; ‘orange’ alerts for four others — Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Nainital and Rudraprayag; and a ‘yellow’ alert for the remaining five districts – Bageshwar, Almora, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar and Pithoragarh.

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places and extremely heavy rainfall in some areas during this period. As a result, mountainous areas face the risk of landslides and road blockages along with rising water levels in rivers and streams. There could be waterlogging in the plains.

Mr Dhami urged the public to follow the guidelines issued by the local administration. He advised people to avoid being near rivers, streams, seasonal waterways and waterlogged areas during heavy rains, and warned against entering fast-flowing waters.

He urged people to take extra care on vulnerable roads and in areas prone to landslides in mountainous areas. The Chief Minister also appealed to parents not to allow their children to go near rivers, streams and other dangerous places.

He directed officials and concerned departments to remain on high alert and constantly monitor sensitive areas – namely river and stream levels, landslide-prone zones, mountain routes, Char Dham Yatra routes and major tourist destinations.

The Chief Minister stressed the need to ensure that all necessary preparations are in place so that rescue and relief operations can begin immediately in case of any potential disaster. He directed that rescue and rescue teams along with essential equipment, JCB and other machines should be made ready at strategic locations.
