
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim and Assam and predicted heavy rain on March 27. Citing an active Western Disturbance, it predicted rain, snowfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds in the Western Himalayan region till March 31. The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted scattered showers in the north-western plains.
The IMD in its latest press release said: “Isolated to scattered rainfall/snowfall with thundershowers, lightning and gusty winds likely over western Himalaya region till March 27 and scattered to fairly widespread during March 28-31 in association with western disturbances. Isolated to scattered rain activity also likely over the plains of northwest India till March 31.”
For this week, the Meteorological Department has predicted “scattered to fairly widespread rainfall along with thundershowers/lightning and gusty winds” over the Northeast region and adjoining East India. The IMD predicted isolated heavy rainfall over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on 27 March: “Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and Meghalaya during 27-29 and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during 28 March 2026.”
While several northwestern, central and southern states are on yellow alert today for rains, the IMD has predicted isolated light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thundershowers, lightning and gusty winds over Punjab till March 28. Similar weather is likely in East Uttar Pradesh today and Rajasthan till March 28.
Additionally, isolated pockets over Kerala are likely to witness hot and humid conditions today. “Solid light rainfall with thundershowers, lightning and gusty winds reaching speed (30-50 kmph) likely over Madhya Pradesh on March 27 and 29-31; Chhattisgarh during next 7 days; Vidarbha during next 5 days,” an IMD press release dated March 26 said.

The IMD has issued a downpour warning for nearby regions, including Haryana’s Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra and Karnal. Very light rain is also likely during the next 2 hours at Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur, Gangoh, Deoband, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Kandhla, Bijnaur, Khatauli, Sakoti Tanda, Hastinapur, Chandpur, Daurala, Meerut, Kithor, Debai, Narora.
The IMD has forecast “generally cloudy skies” with very light rain or drizzle for Thursday. This weather condition will be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning from morning to morning and then again during the afternoon to evening.
The maximum temperature is likely to settle somewhere between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 19 to 21 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature will be above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places and the maximum temperature will be close to normal at most places over Delhi, the IMD said.
