Senior members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Telangana participated in the National Scientific Workshop on Suicide Prevention held as part of the Mental Health Conference in Jodhpur on Saturday. The session brought together psychiatrists and physicians to discuss counseling methods, diagnostic evaluation, and recent advances in the treatment of individuals at risk of suicide.
IMA Telangana President P. Kishan spoke on counseling strategies and psychosocial interventions, emphasizing early identification of distress, strong support systems and clear communication for those with suicidal thoughts.
General Secretary of the Indian Psychiatric Society for Southern Zone States, George Reddy, outlined diagnostic procedures that support early detection, including risk assessment, recognition of behavioral warning signs and mental status assessment.
Indian Psychiatric Society National Council member Vishal Akula focused on the medical aspect of suicide management. He said that reduced levels of serotonin and dopamine can contribute to depression and suicidal ideation, and discussed the role of modern psychotropic drugs, emergency interventions and ongoing research in shaping current treatment approaches.
