Ritam Mondal, a fourth year student enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering program, was found hanging in his room in the Hostel Rajendra Prasad (RP), said the PTI Institute.
How did the incident appear
Iit Kharagpur, originally from Kalcata, returned to his room in Rajendra Prasad Hall after dinner on Thursday evening. “There was nothing unusual in his behavior,” one of his hostel friends said, still trying to process the news, PTI reported.
The following morning, when repeated knocking on Ritam’s door did not respond, the security of the campus and the police located at the IIT base were alerted. They opened the door – just to find it inside.
Since then, the Institute has filed a company and said it has been fully cooperating with the investigation.
The student’s family was also informed, the official said.
“No Indicator of Mental Health Problem”
The fourth year student recently returned to the IIT KharaGPur campus after a summer holiday.
Varsity said that no abnormalities had been reported in the behavior of 21 years, nor was there any “indicator of mental health problem”.
“Mondal continued his classes. According to records reviewed from the Sarth Institute consulting Center, there were no previous indicators of mental health problems. The Ministry also stated that there were no apparent academic and non -academic issues that attracted their attention.”
Iit KharaGpur also said that the incident was established by the Committee for Finding Reality.
Iit KharaGPur suicide: previous cases
The death of Ritam Mondal denotes the fourth such tragic case in Iit KharaGpur.
- In May 2025, Mohammed Asif Qamar, a third year of building engineering, was found dead in his hostel room, which triggered a police probe. Before the incident he was reportedly in a video call and the authorities at the other end summoned a person to the other end
- Asif Qamar’s death was preceded by a similar case in April. Aniket Walkar was in his hostel, which was discovered by a student who was the fourth year of ocean engineering and naval architecture. That was the third suicide in less than a year, in the Iit KharaGpur campus.
- In January, the body of the third year of Shaon Malik was found in his hostel room.
In June last year, Devika Pillai, a student of biotechnology and biochemical engineering, also died on the campus.
