An Indian engineer currently working in Japan has caught the attention of social media users after he opened up about his life and career in Tokyo. A video shot by Instagram user Sunakshi Sharma shows her talking to an Indian engineer who works in the Japanese capital of Tokyo. An engineer talks about his professional life, daily routine and workplace culture in Japan.
The video begins with Sharma greeting the technician and asking about his well-being, to which he introduces himself as Shresth Somya from Bihar, who is currently staying in Japan.
Explaining how he moved abroad, Somya says his journey began at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. He recalls that Honda visited the campus during the placement season and offered him the role. “I studied at IIT Delhi. From there, a company, Honda, came for internships. I got a job offer and came here last year,” he explains.
Life in Tokyo
When asked about his experience living in Tokyo, Somya shared that the city was an exciting change. “It’s quite fun. A different environment and culture to experience. So every day is something new,” he says, emphasizing the novelty of daily life in Japan.
Sharma further asked him about the cost of living in Tokyo. Somya admits that his expenses have increased significantly after the relocation. “When I came to Tokyo, my expenses from one lakh have just doubled to 1.50 lakh yen. I only eat out for lunch, I cook dinner daily. But the expenses are still not going down,” he notes.
However, there is good news on the housing front. When asked about the rent, he says, “Yes, my company pays my rent.”
Commenting on the perception of Japan’s demanding work culture, Sharma said that he finds the work culture to be good and that there is positivity in his team.
“No, I’ve never encountered any toxicity in the team,” he says, presenting a positive picture of his workplace.
