
New variety of turmeric developed by the Indian Institute for Research Spices, Kozhikode.
Indian Research of Spices (IISR), Kozhikode, has developed a new luminous turmeric diversity specifically for Masala industry. The new variety, IISR Surya, has a bright rhizome that meets the specific needs of the modern powder industry.
IISR Surya is expected to have developed after focus after focus and significantly benefit farmers specialized in the production of high -quality turmeric. It will also deal with the lack of the product on the open and export market, which was strongly dependent on several other local varieties, scientists said.
The new variety with a pleasant fragrance is highly profitable, which offers an increase in yield of 20% to 30% compared to existing light local varieties. According to scientists who worked for a new product, it can bring up to 41 tons per hectare. The curcumin content ranges from 2% to 3%, which was at the same level with other light Kurka varieties, they said.
Scientists IISR said that the new variety was published after ten years of research with the support of scientists D. Praath, S. Arathi, NK Leela, S. Mukesh Sankar and B. Sasikumar. They said Iisr Surya was developed by clonal selection of approaches maintained at the conservatory of turmeric in the institute conservatory. It was recommended for cultivation in Kerala, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand and Arunacal Pradesh at the coordinated research project All India for spices.
