Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS) has revived its ‘Exhibition of the Month’ program to attract visitors and showcase the diverse cultural traditions of the country. The museum, which functions under the Ministry of Culture, has several unique exhibits in its collection that highlight India’s rich heritage.
The museum presented a traditional rain-making ritual from Chhattisgarh – the symbolic marriage of frogs – as the exhibit of the month. A clay model of the frog is displayed along with details of the ritual.
A note from IGRMS says that the ritual, practiced by agrarian communities during the dry season, is performed in the month of ‘Sawan’ when the monsoon does not arrive. The ritual is performed based on the belief that frogs are closely associated with rain and the onset of the monsoon. The ritual is organized together by the villagers and includes a procession, community participation and some activities.
