Iga Swiatek breaks down in tears, struggles with leg injury in heartbreaking loss at Wuhan Open
Iga Swiatek’s Wuhan Open campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion as the six-time Grand Slam champion broke down in tears as she battled a painful left leg injury during her semi-final defeat to compatriot Maja Chwalinska on Saturday. Struggling to move freely around the court, Swiatek eventually lost 5-7, 1-6, bringing her impressive run in Wuhan to an abrupt end.
The former world number one was visibly hampered by injury as the opening set drew to a close. At 5-6, Swiatek called for a medical timeout as she battled soreness in her left thigh. The Pole was treated before returning to the court with a bandaged thigh, but physical discomfort continued to affect her movement.
It was increasingly difficult for Swiatek to push on her injured leg and chase down Chwalinska’s returns. The usually relentless baseliner, known for her speed and ability to cover the court, was unable to move with her usual freedom.

The emotional toll of the situation was evident when Swiatek broke down in tears during treatment. The sight of the six-time major winner struggling to cope with the pain was a heartbreaking moment, especially given the significance of the all-Poland encounter.
Despite her physical problems, Swiatek decided to continue the fight rather than withdraw from the match. However, Chwalinska took advantage of her opponent’s limited mobility to take control of the contest.

Chwalinska was nervous to close out the first set at 7-5 before dominating the second 6-1. She continued to pressure Swiatek, forcing the injured star to cover the court and making it difficult for her to recover between points.
The win sent Chwalinska to the Wuhan Open final, marking a major milestone in her career. The Polish player will face Britain’s Sonay Kartal in the championship match. Kartal secured her place in the final by defeating Jelena Ostapenko 7-6(9), 7-6(5).
The result was particularly poignant given the history between the two players. Swiatek and Chwalinska have known each other since their junior years and were once doubles partners, making the semi-finals a special occasion for Polish tennis.
Before the match, Chwalinska spoke warmly of their long association, describing a relationship that stretched back to the beginning of their tennis journeys.
For Swiatek, the defeat was a painful end to a promising campaign in Wuhan. Her immediate priority will be to assess the left leg injury and determine how it will affect her upcoming program.
