Iga Swiatek braces for tough grass test against high-flying Alexander Eal
Defending champion Iga Swiatek faces one of her toughest tests yet at Wimbledon after setting up a third-round clash with rising Filipino star Alexandra Eal, a player she believes is becoming even more dangerous on grass.
The two players have met twice on the WTA Tour, with the head-to-head match tied at 1:1. Eala stunned Swiatek in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Miami Open in straight sets before the Polish star avenged the defeat with a three-set victory in the second round of the Madrid Open later that season.
Wimbledon 2026 – 4th Update
Although Swiatek has already experienced Eala’s game on hard courts and clay, the reigning champion admitted that grass presents a completely different challenge.
“I’m not particularly familiar with her game on grass. Of course you can watch her a little bit. But I know how she plays because we’ve played before. She has a difficult game. I can assume that on grass it’s even more difficult because of the surface,” Swiatek said after advancing to the third round.
The five-time Grand Slam champion believes Eal’s ability to mix up the tempo and disrupt the rhythm makes her particularly dangerous on the Wimbledon grass.
“She definitely uses her strengths, the change of rhythm and everything. So I’m going to prepare and be ready. It’s going to be a good challenge for me because she doesn’t give that rhythm. I have to be ready for different kinds of shots,” Swiatek added.
LIKE SWIATEK, EALA CONTINUED TO ROUND 3
Swiatek booked her place in the third round with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 win over former world number one Karolína Plíšková on center court. After surviving a tough three-set test against Taylor Townsend in the opening round, the defending champion looked much more composed, dominating with heavy topspin, accurate returns and relentless consistency.
The victory also marked her 26th consecutive appearance in the third round of a Grand Slam, a feat accomplished only by Martina Navratilová and Conchita Martinez in the Open Era.
Meanwhile, Eala continued her impressive rise by fighting back from a set down to defeat Australia’s Maya Joint 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Seeded 29th, the 21-year-old showed her poise and versatility to reach the last 32 at the All England Club and set up another intriguing meeting with Swiatek.
With their rivalry level at one win apiece and Eala enjoying the best Grand Slam run of her career, Saturday’s contest promises to be one of the highlights of the women’s draw as Swiatek looks to keep her title defense on track against one of the tour’s fastest-rising stars.
