If Sanju Samson does, he never disappoints: Gavaskar on India’s batting star

Sunil Gavaskar was happy to see Sanju Samson play conservatively early on before beating Afghanistan in the second T20I in Delhi. Samson scored 57 off 22 balls to help India secured a seven-wicket winbut his start was rather measured.

After failing in the first match of the series, the Indian keeper was cautious to start knocking and at one point was on 8 off 12 balls. Once he managed to gain the confidence he needed, Samson quickly dismantled the Afghan bowling and raced to his fifty in just 20 balls.

He finished with a strike price of 259.09better than Abhishek Sharma who scored 39 off 19 balls.

Speaking to TV stations, Gavaskar said that all Samson needs is consistency when it comes to his batting. The Indian legend opined that if Samson continues this approach when the chase is not big, then he will never fail in his quest to find consistency and score a lot of runs.

“Sometimes it’s consistency you want and because the openers get most of the batting in the 20-over-20, they have the most opportunities to score. Sometimes, like today, he played himself and started hitting the balls later. If he keeps doing that, I don’t think he’ll ever fail. He’ll get 50s and 60s every time,” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar also said that Samson tends not to score when he tries to hit the ball out of the park early on.

“Only when he tries to try and bang from the first ball, and then you have to do that when you’re chasing 190 or 200, then there’s no way to do that. But he’s a great player,” Gavaskar said.

Samson’s knock helped India win the series.
