Manchester City manager PEP Guardiola focused on his Premier League rivals before Sunday’s trip to the Emirates, suggesting that any title success for Arsenal or Liverpool would largely descend to great expenses rather than coaching or players’ quality. The Spaniard also indicated that his own party is often considered a similar transmission activity, causing a new debate on how the financial firepower is perceived in English football.
Guardiola remarks come after the summer in which Liverpool spent over 440 meters on new recruits, including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ecitike, while Arsenal invested around 250 meters and brought players like Martin Zubimendi, Ebechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres. The comments of the city boss underline the growing financial race in the Premier League, where the clubs are measured equally according to their banking balances as their performance on the playground.
“I just want to tell my friend Mikel Artta, if he wins the title, it will be just because he spent, not because he worked a lot or his players,” Guardiola said sarcastically. “It’s like Liverpool. If Arne (Slot) wins again, it will be because he spent a lot of money. Because it didn’t happen only (in) Man City, right? So for all of them.”
“The only thing I can say is that they were wise. They spent what they believe they can do, you know to compete with the best teams in the Premier League and Europe and reach this level.”
“So I think the team in this way, the club, and step by step, the window, step by step, Arsenal is improving. They have taken incredible steps in Europe last season and are the strongest team for me.
Visiting the city in Arsenal is already charged as a potential decision of the title in the early season. The Guardiol men bounced back from defeats with a back-k back with a 3-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League and the 2-0 victory in Napoli in the Champions League before the international break. Recent trips to the Emirates, however, proved to be delicate. The city has lost the last two visits to the league in Arsenal, including a heavy defeat 5-1 in February, which since April 2009 has identified their longest escape to the shooter.
Guardiola also emphasized what he considers to be uneven checks over the expenses of transmission. Liverpool, fresh from the title victory last season, spent 446 million pounds in one window, broke the British transmission records twice, while Arsenal strengthened his team of 250 meters in signatures. Meanwhile, the city has invested over £ 1 billion in the team by 2020/21 in the team, but the Spaniard believes that their expenses are assessed more critical than their opponents.
While Guardiol’s comments were attached by sarcasm, he acknowledged the progress of Arsenal and Liverpool.
