Voter turnout in 63 local bodies in Idukki district was 70.26% as of 07:00 PM on Tuesday. Out of a total of 9,121,224 voters, 6,40,890 voters cast their vote.
In the 2020 local body elections, the district recorded a voting rate of 74.68%.
The polls were held in 52 gram panchayats, eight block panchayats, two municipalities and a district panchayat. There were a total of 1036 candidates in the fray.
Voter turnout was recorded at 77.36% in Thodupuzha and 69.56% in Kattappana. The voter turnout at the block panchayat level is as follows: Devikulam 68.84%, Nedumkandam 73.01%, Elamdesham 75.19%, Idukki 66.56%, Kattappana 70.51%, Thodupuzha 73.05%, Azhutha % and Adimaly 66.05%.
The first tribal panchayat in Edamalakkudy recorded 68.22% voting. Out of 1,803 voters of the tribal panchayat, 1,230 voters cast their vote.
Augustine Water Resources Minister Roshy occupied his Vazhathope Government LP School along with his wife Rani. Mar John Nellikkuel, Bishop of Idukki Diocese of Syro-Malabar Church cast his vote at Karimpan Manipora LP School in idki. Kerala Congress faction leader (Joseph) Pj Joseph gave his hearing at Purappuzha LP School in Thodupuzha.
A 104-year-old man and a 101-year-old woman cast their vote in the precinct.
In a tragic incident, a 20-year-old drowned in a dam after casting his vote in Idukki. The deceased was identified as Karunapuram resident Chalakkudimedu Sreejith.
According to the police, the incident took place around 12:00 p.m. The deceased, who was returning home after casting his vote at the Appappikkada booth in Karunapuram panchayath, went to take a bath in the dam and drowned. Police and local residents rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he could not be saved. The body was sent for an autopsy.
